Black Sheep Farm is located near the rural community of Big Lake Ranch in the
Cariboo Region of
central British
Columbia. First homesteaded at the turn of the last century, this property has been
developed as an alternative to, and a shelter from, the uncertainties of the global economy.
Everything has been designed and built with a self-sufficient lifestyle in mind. Hayland and pasture
have been developed for mixed livestock production to meet the growing demand for ethically
raised local food. The property is fenced and cross fenced for efficient handling of animals.
Wetlands and forestlands have been preserved for ecosystem continuity and future development.
A seasonal creek fills two permanent ponds to support waterfowl and provide fire protection.
Wells provide abundant, clean domestic water.
The sale includes the transfer of a long-term renewable Woodlot License on 600ha (1500 acres) of
adjoining forest land. The license allows for the sustainable harvest of 900 cubic metres (about 22
full sized logging trucks) of wood annually. This can be sold on the open market or used to supply
the two sawmills included on the property with valuable fir sawlogs, building logs and other forest
products.
The mill operation is sized to match the timber supply and designed for expansion into other,
value-added, wood manufacturing possibilities.
The buildings range from the historic Big Lake Ranch schoolhouse, now used as an art studio, to
newly built structures in a complimentary style. The main house is a charming log home with three
bedrooms and two bathrooms. The ground floor features an open living space with a modern
country kitchen, dining room and living room, all with lovely views of the property and surrounding
hills. There is a guest cabin renovated from an original log structure, outdoor sauna, root cellar,
shop and carport. There are shelters for equipment and a large stock barn with hay storage and
stalls for horses.
